Phone Review: Samsung Behold

The Samsung Behold is a touchscreen phone featuring superior touch sensitivity, allowing users to navigate easy by a simple touch. It also features a widget based home screen which allows users to have quick access to frequently used applications and customize their home screen display according to their preferences.

However, this shouldn’t detach from the fact that the other parts of the UI are very responsive, unlike the Dare. There is also haptic feedback. The calls on the Samsung Behold sounded very good. However, the person on the other side complained that our voice sounded metallic! There were some slight reception problems. 5.5 hours is what we managed as far as talk time is concerned, which is a good feat. The contact list was also very strong and had a number of fields to organize the contacts. The speakerphone is extremely loud, which is how a good speakerphone should be. On full volume, there was only slight distortion of sound. The calling interface is also very neat and clean.

The on-screen keyboard is one of the best we’ve seen. IM fans have good news as most major email providers are supported. The messaging client wasn’t very advanced, though it was fairly OK. The on-screen keyboard is very responsive and very accurate.

The media player of the Behold is solid. It has a nice interface and a decent range of features. Playback could easily be controlled with our fingers and the phone synced without a problem with WMP. The music player has a widget on the home page, so you can control it from there. Data transfer between the phone and the computer was really fast.

A 1GB microSD card comes with the phone. It can take up to 8GB, which is really good considering the music player and the 5 megapixel camera. However, a 3.5mm headset jack would’ve been greatly appreciated, or at least a 3.5mm adapter. The phone works with stereo Bluetooth.

Due to the strange resolution of the screen, the videos that we played had to be downsized to QVGA, which didn’t really make for a pleasant viewing experience.

However, web browsing is a real letdown, because the phone boasts to have a full-HTML browser, but it’s pointless if the phone is recognized as a mobile device, which means that the content displayed by most websites is extremely bad. Also, due to scrolling problems, navigation was a bit of an annoyance. At 5 megapixels, the camera specifications seem impressive on paper, but does not live up to our expectations. It has auto-focus lens, but even under the best lighting, it isn’t as super sharp as a 5 megapixel camera should be!

GPS functionality is not very accurate on testing. It was a few feet off our actual position. However, it could be due to signal obstructions in our crowded city area.
