Conclusion Samsung Galaxy S10 preview

The Samsung Galaxy S10 makes an excellent first impression. All plus points from previous years are present. Not only the big ones like a beautiful screen and a sleek design, but also things like the headphone jack and space for a memory card that many competitors have scrapped. And because the Galaxy S9 was already such a strong device, Samsung sets a very good foundation.

Moreover, the improvements work out at first glance. The telephoto and wide-angle lens are very good additions, and the camera hole is a nice alternative to the notch. The Samsung Galaxy S10 is a very complete smartphone, equipped with all essential features plus a lot of nice extras.

Three different models

Samsung Galaxy S10 PlusThe screen of the Galaxy S10 Plus measures 6.4 inches; the size of the note 9. The regular S10 has a 6.1 inch display. The cheaper S10e is equipped with a 5.8 inch screen, which makes it the same size as the galaxy s8 and S9.

The Galaxy S10 Plus has two cameras at the front and three at the back. It is a normal 12 megapixel camera, a 16 megapixel camera with a wide angle lens and a 12 megapixel telephoto camera to zoom in without loss of quality. The two other S10 models are said to have two cameras on the back.

Camera hole and fingerprint scanner in the screen

An interesting new feature on the Galaxy S10 Plus is the fingerprint scanner. It is – as you see in the pictures – no longer on the back of the smartphone. Samsung puts the scanner under the screen, which makes it invisible. If you want to unlock the phone, a small part of the display lights up so that you can see where to put your finger on the screen. More and more (expensive) smartphones have a fingerprint scanner under the screen, although it is mostly optical scanners. The S10 Plus receives an ultrasonic scanner, which is more accurate and faster.

Another innovation is the design of the front camera. It is processed in a kind of hole at the top right of the screen. A screen notch, such as on the iPhone and many Android phones from 2018, is therefore not necessary. Thanks to this design choice, the screen edges of the Galaxy S10 Plus are also smaller than those of the and. Ideal.

Face recognition instead of iris scanner

Aren’t you a fan of the fingerprint scanner under the screen? Then you can also choose a different security method with the Galaxy S10 Plus. Not the iris scanner, which has been on expensive Galaxy phones for years. With the S10, Samsung would exchange the slow and moderately working iris scanner for face recognition.

Samsung Galaxy S10 PlusAndroid 9.0 (Pie) with One UI software

The latest Android version is installed on the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus. Samsung has recently developed a completely new software layer: One UI. This skin was introduced with the Pie update and can therefore also be found on the S10 models. Compared to the previous skin, One UI has a quieter design, with fewer (not so important) options.

Moreover, the software is optimized for telephones with large screens, such as that of the S10 Plus. For example, shortcuts in apps are no longer shown at the top but at the bottom, so that you can access them more easily if you operate your device with one hand. One UI also has a built-in night mode that gives the screen warmer tones in the evenings. That’s better for your eyes.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

Samsung’s update policy is clear and long-lasting. If you buy a Galaxy S10 Plus, you can count on at least two major Android updates. In the coming years, the phone will be updated to Android Q and R. In addition, Samsung makes a security patch available every month. That is nice, and extremely important because you always remain protected.

Larger batteries and faster charging

The battery life of smartphones is always a tricky issue. Samsung seems to understand that and gives the Galaxy S10 Plus a large 4100 mAh battery. Last year’s Galaxy Note 9 has a slightly smaller battery and will last a long day without any problems. The Galaxy S10 has a battery with a capacity of 3400 mAh; considerably more than the 3000 mAh battery that is in the Galaxy S9. The cheaper Galaxy S10e has a 3100 mAh battery, which you also have to get through the day with.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus has support for fast charging, but does not charge faster than its predecessor. What has improved considerably is wireless charging. Samsung says that wireless charging on the S10 Plus is 33 percent faster than its predecessor. Ideal, because you don’t have to wait that long until the battery is full again.

Another innovation is that the Galaxy S10 Plus can charge other smartphones. This is done wirelessly via the Qi standard. If you hold the back of the S10 Plus against the back of another suitable phone, the last device will charge. This feature can also be found on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro from 2018.

Galaxy S10 Plus release date and suggested retail price
The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus has been available in the Netherlands since 8 March 2019. The suggested retail prices of the S10 Plus, S10 and S10e are respectively 999 euros, 899 euros and 749 euros. All configurations can be found in our extensive price comparison.
